Check mirrors

Use the fingertip test: touch the mirror surface. On a real mirror, there's a gap between your finger and its reflection. If your finger touches the reflection directly, it could be two-way glass.

Look for: Two-way mirrors, especially those facing the bed or dressing area

Inspect smoke detectors

Look at each smoke detector closely. Real ones have visible sensor vents. Hidden cameras may have a small lens (1-3mm pinhole) that doesn't belong.

Look for: Pinhole lenses, unusual wiring, extra devices attached

Check alarm clocks & electronics

Examine alarm clocks, radios, and any electronics facing the bed. Look for tiny holes that could conceal a lens. Unplug and move items that look suspicious.

Look for: Pinholes, unusual LED lights, devices positioned toward bed

Inspect USB chargers & outlets

USB wall chargers are a common hiding spot. Check any USB charger already plugged in — real chargers don't have lens pinholes. Remove and replace with your own if unsure.

Look for: Pinholes on charger faces, unusual weight, extra bulk

Scan decorative items

Check picture frames, plants, stuffed animals, air fresheners, and any object facing the bed or bathroom. Tilt them and look for lenses or electronics.

Look for: Small lenses in objects, items with unusual positioning

Phone camera IR scan

Turn off all lights. Open your phone camera (use front camera — it often lacks an IR filter). Slowly scan the room looking for small purple/white lights on your screen. These could be IR LEDs used by night-vision cameras.

Look for: Glowing dots visible only through phone camera

Some cameras can't be found this way

A BBC investigation found professionally installed cameras hardwired into hotel electrical systems. Consumer RF scanners and visual checks couldn't detect them. If you're in a high-risk situation, consider professional debugging services.
